Gimme Space

"We have no space."

I hear it all the time. And while that may be true, it's almost always the case that my clients are surrounded by things they don't need, use, or love.

If storage space is limited, the first step is to clear out the clutter and make room for the things that are truly important to you. Once you've done that, a few simple tricks can help you make the most of what you have.

Store things vertically. When possible, store items on their side. You'll fit more in, see everything at a glance, and find it easier to take things out and put them back.

Remove packaging. Take things out of their boxes and plastic wrap- including dry cleaning bags, which trap erosive chemicals- so they're easier to manage and store. You'll also be able to see what you have at a glance and restock as needed. I've had projects where simply removing packaging transformed the space entirely.

Eliminate unnecessary multiples. Pulling out extra hangers instantly creates breathing room and a natural incentive to let go of clothing when you need to free one up. Do you have more than one can opener or vegetable peeler? Keep your favorite. Other low-hanging fruit: leftover hardware, water bottles, mystery cords, and reusable bags. Keep the best; keep the others moving.

Be a tourist in your own home. Walk through your space and notice what's underutilized. Could something be moved there to free up prime real estate elsewhere? Would a hook, shelf, riser, cart, or behind-the-door solution make an awkward spot suddenly usable? Try taking photos - seeing your home through a camera lens can help you spot things your eyes have learned to overlook.
